Northern Leopard Frog
Rana pipiens
Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve
Bangor, Maine
Yesterday on the back side of the trail system near the marsh, this four-inch frog hopped across our path. The color in this photo is more subdued than I remember. The frog was more vibrant with various shaped dark spots on a brighter green background. Each spot was outlined with a lighter-colored ring. It let us look at it for quite a while and even stood still for a family that happened by. My touch near its front legs sent it on its way into the leaf litter nearby
Leopard frogs range between two to five inches and are found in meadows, forests and wetlands. Here's a great link for more information and a clear audio recording -http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/amphibians/northern-leopard-frog/.
