Mission & Core Values

BANGOR LAND TRUST’S MISSION IS TO:
Protect for public benefit land and water in the Bangor region that have special ecological, natural, scenic, agricultural, or recreational significance, while increasing public understanding of the value of land and water conservation.

OUR CORE VALUES:
BLT values natural communities: BLT values the plants, animals, and other biological groups that live in natural communities and the beneficial effects of these communities for people.

BLT supports long-term stewardship of local natural communities: By acquiring land and easements, BLT helps to ensure the preservation of these communities for present and future generations. We monitor our lands in perpetuity. BLT also supports long-term stewardship of the earth as a whole, making decisions that promote sustainability. We support organizations and businesses that use resources in a sustainable way.

BLT values and promotes the direct and personal connection between people and nature: BLT makes its lands available for public uses that are compatible with our stewardship goals and responsibilities. We believe that being close to nature promotes physical and emotional health, and it is part of BLT's role to make that possible in the greater Bangor area.

BLT values knowledge of natural systems: BLT works to manage its lands based on the best scientific knowledge available. We help people learn more about their natural environment through community education. We believe that knowledge enhances people’s enjoyment of nature and will enhance their ability to care for the the natural world.

BLT values the quality of life in the greater Bangor area: We believe that quality of life is based on a balance of physical, cultural, and economic ammenities. We promote a proper balance between economic development and conservation of natural resources in the greater Bangor community. Preserving open space and protecting public access makes Bangor a more livable, attractive, and vibrant community and enhances both the economy and the health of its residents and visitors.

BLT values cooperation: We respect the rights of landowners and people who earn, or have earned, their livelihood from the land. BLT works cooperatively with other organizations and institutions to achieve its mission. When conflicts arise, we seek to accomplish our mission through education and dialog rather than confrontation.
