Black and Yellow Garden Spider
Argiope aurantia
Holden, Maine
The Black and Yellow Garden Spider is one of the larger spiders found in Maine. This particular female was found in a field. She had built her web in the tall grass. She must have chose a good spot, for in this photo she is wrapping silk around an insect for later consumption.
Spiders inject the insects they catch with an enzyme in order to liquify their meals. Unable to chew, they drink for nourishment.
