Penjajawoc Overlook
Bangor Land Trust's 3.6 acre South Penjajawoc
Overlook property was gifted by Columbia Street Baptist Church in May of 2003.
BLT originally had a 1/3 shared interest with the Good Samaritan Agency, but divided the property into two separate parcels in December 2007. The property is located off of Essex St. and currently has limited
access.
 West
Penjajawoc Grasslands
This 13.1 acre parcel was gifted by Fritz and Caroline Oldenburg in
December 2004. The upland meadow habitat lies adjacent to an additional
18.4 acre parcel of upland meadow and emergent wetland habitat donated
to Maine Audubon in November 2000. In May 2006, the BLT Board approved
a Management Plan for the property that encourages appropriate use
of the property with a special emphasis on developing the site as
a regional destination for bird watching. The kiosk was built in 2005 with materials generously donated by Hammond Lumber Company. Directions: From the Stillwater
end of Essex St., drive approximately 3 miles, passing Chestnut Trail
and taking your next right onto Fox Hollow Lane. Stay on Fox Hollow
Lane until you reach the cul-de-sac parking area at the end. The BLT
kiosk is located just off of this cul-de-sac.
 Walden-Parke
Preserve
This 205.51 acre parcel gifted in December 2005 is the first installment
of what will eventually become 410 acres gifted by Fritz and Caroline
Oldenburg and Dennis and Jane Shubert. The property features several
habitat types including hardwood and softwood forests, beaver wetlands,
and a portion of the Caribou Bog. Its management plan is being developed
by both BLT and Maine Audubon as part of the Focus Species Forestry
project. Directions: From the Stillwater end of Essex St., drive approximately
4 miles, passing Church rd on your left. Take your next right onto
Walden Parke Way at the entrance of the Edgewood Subdivision. Turn
right onto Tamarack Trail and park at the end of the road where you
will see a BLT sign.
Levant Wetlands
Since March 2006, BLT has held 11.8 acres in easement as wetland mitigation
for Hammond Lumber Company. The property is located in close proximity
to additional valuable wetlands and is in the Black Stream, Kenduskeag,
Penobscot watershed. BLT is currently awaiting transfer of the property
as fee ownership. Directions: Take Union St. through Levant and stay
straight onto Avenue Rd. at the intersection with Stetson Rd. The
BLT property is immediately after Levant Heights Drive on the left.
 Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve
This 80.5 acre property is actually two neighboring parcels acquired in November 2006 and February 2007. Together they offer 18.4 acres of wetlands,including 3 of state significance: the northeast tip of the Penjajawoc Marsh, a vernal pool, and a tributary marsh. Along with its forested uplands, this property provides valuable habitat for a variety of species. It also gives access to the Old Veazie Railroad bed, where you can then walk to Walden-Parke or the City Forest. You can get to Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve from Kittredge Rd. off of Stillwater Ave. You will see a BLT kiosk on the left next to where the pavement ends.
