Dogs and Bangor Land Trust Preserves

Recognizing the enjoyment that both dogs and dog owners find in walking in the woods, Bangor Land Trust allows dogs on some preserve trails and during certain seasons.  Wherever dogs are allowed, they must be kept on leash to protect wildlife and other users’ enjoyment.  We ask dog owners to please clean up after their pets in all seasons.

Leashed Dogs are allowed on the following preserve trails:

·         Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve, All Trails

·         North Penjajawoc Forest, All Trails

·         Walden-Parke Preserve, Blue Trail only

·         West Penjajawoc Grassland, All Trails, August 1 to March 31 only

No Dogs are allowed in the following preserves:

·         Central Penjajawoc Preserve

·         West Penjajawoc Grasslands, April 1 to July 31 (during Bobolink nesting season)

We recognize that some dog owners (and dogs) will find these limitations frustrating.  We arrived at these guidelines after thorough research on the effects of off-leash dogs on wildlife, observation of the dynamics between off-leash dogs and trail users at the Bangor City Forest and elsewhere, and much thoughtful discussion.  Dog owners who wish to allow their pets to run off leash may use the Bangor Dog Park located in Essex Woods Park at end of Watchmaker Street or the Bangor City Forest, which allows off-leash dogs on some of its trails.

We ask that out of consideration for other trail users and the wildlife who make their home in BLT Preserves you follow these usage guidelines.
