Bring boots, warm layers, a flashlight or headlamp, and a walking stick (if you like). The Blue Trail is broad and level, and the surrounding trees are relatively young, so once our eyes adjust we may be able to walk without artificial light.
Foul weather would force us to cancel or postpone. If we need to do so, we'll update this page on Saturday morning.
Meet at the BLT kiosk at the end of Tamarack Trail. To get there, go north on Essex St about 4 miles from the intersection with Stillwater Ave, passing Church Rd on your left. Take your next right onto Walden Parke Way at the entrance of the Edgewood Subdivision. Turn right onto Tamarack Trail and park at the end of the road where you will see a BLT kiosk.

Topic: Invasive Species -- What should we do? Is Bangor being invaded? What about those evil foreign bugs? Are plants "from away" harmful and if so, why? With climate change, won't all plants be "from away" in another fifty years? Do the plants in our backyard make a difference?

Did you know that Bangor has five streams that are listed as impaired under the Federal Clean Water Act standards? And that Bangor will probably spend millions of dollars to bring them back to health? Have you wondered how to tell if a stream is healthy? Or what we need to do to take care of our streams?
Mark Whiting from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection will give a workshop on Urban Stream Health. Mark will show us aquatic bugs -- macroinvertebrates -- that live in healthy streams and demonstrate the other methods that DEP uses to measure stream health. This will take about an hour and a half. Anyone who is interested can then accompany Mark to a comparison site at one of the impaired streams -- Penjajawoc -- where it flows through Evergreen Woods, and see what can be found there. There's a whole new world of urban wildlife to be discovered!
We'll meet at the Kenduskeag Park on Valley Ave. Coming from the south (and going upstream) it's the second parking lot past the I-95 bridge.
